Steven asks…

How long do Diverticulitis symptoms last ?

I’m 36 with a suspected case of diverticulitis – started with pain & tenderness on the left side of abdomen. My Dr put me on a liquid-only diet for 3 days, & then low residue diet.
He also put me on Metronidazole (Flagyl) 500mg
Cipro 500mg
Florastor 250mg
I had a CT Scan that didnt show any abnormalities – no abcesses.

Its been a 2 weeks now & I’m done with my course of medication.
Pain / discomfort persist in lower left side & groin, along with other parts of stomach, gurgling sounds in stomach.
Intensity of pain / discomfort varies.
Lower back pain and pain in legs, especially left leg.
Uncomfortable at night & affected sleep pattern. Occasional diarrhea, with BM in early morning hours.

Is this normal for Diverticulitis receovery? How long do these symptoms last?

Thank you.

Nutritionatlast answers:

You may consider going to the doctor again and getting it checked out – it doesn’t seem right to still be hurting after taking meds that are supposed to help you. You may also want to look into all-natural supplements such as AloeElite, since I hear prescription meds can actually make symptoms worse.

Ken asks…

Diverticulitis – symptoms? my mother has acute diarrhoea and has just been diagnosed that she has Diverticu?

and has just been diagnosed that she has Diverticulitis – after having a colonoscopy. Is this a common symptom of this disease? I have been trying to find out, but mostly see that constipation is the symptom. She can’t go anywhere outside the house without taking anti-diarrhoea tablets and is caught short (very quickly and without any warning). She has been told to have a high fibre diet, but feels, obviously, the opposite is needed.

thanks for your help if you know about this subject.
Springfields haven – Thanks for the information . I will certainly read it.

Nutritionatlast answers:

Diverticular disease is an almost inevitable finding in all those above 50 years in the UK. It is the formation of hundreds of pouches in the large bowel due to higher than desirable pressure in the bowel, due to lifelong low fibre diets.

Though high fibre diet is the ultimate preventative, it needs to be lifelong and the evidence that it helps to improve the situation in later life is sparse.

Symptoms occur when these diverticulae become blocked and infected. This usually produces diarrhea and abdominal pain. This can be severe and occasionally results in perforation of the bowel.

Acute attacks are usually managed by fluid diet and sometimes oral antibiotics. More severe episodes may need total bowel rest with IV fluids and IV antibiotics. Occasionally a bowel segment is so badly damaged it needs to be removed surgically.

Black women and Mixed Black women: What natural food product is better for the hair avocado or coconut oil?

Especially if you’re using it as a deep conditioner, when it’s wet, healthy for the hair or something like that, etc.

BQ: What type of hair hair do you have (relaxed, natural, bi-racial, two different combined textures, etc)?
Want black women/mixed black women answering this with on topic questions. No ranting, racist comments, off-topic answers, etc.
Has anyone ever really used riped natural avocado and put it on their hair then wash it?

Nutritionatlast answers:

Black Female- Natural for 4 years now…
I use Nutiva Coconut Oil, it’s amazing….

It helps with:
Dandruff control.
Adds body and shine to dull lifeless hair.
Moisturizes, softens and conditions dry hair.
Strengthens hair from inside the shaft.
Prevents split ends.
Smoothes roughness in the hair.
Increases hair growth (because of less damage and breakage).

The fact that coconut oil smells like heaven doesn’t hurt either!

Sandra asks…

What diet does a person with Crohns disease have to follow?

My brother was just diagnosed with Crohns on Thursday, but can not get into the doctor or nutritionist for a week and a half. What are the diet guidelines that he should be following until he can get into the doctor so he wont be aggravating it?
Also… my brother is only 32, is that young for a diagnosis like this?

Nutritionatlast answers:

My mom and aunt have crohns and each have a list of different foods they have to avoid- its an individual tollerance thing- but i did look it up and heres a link to check out that should help-

http://www.webmd.com/ibd-crohns-disease/crohns-guide/crohns-ibd-overview-facts

If he’s been sick long enough to have crohns he should have a pretty good idea himself what he should stay away from-

best of luck – and crohns can happen at any age

Steven asks…

I have Crohns Disease and would like to diet. Does anyone have any diet plans specifically for this?

I have Crohns Disease and seem to have put on about 4 stone due to having to take steriods on and off. I would like to diet but find that alot of diet plans focus mainly on fibre related products which I can’t eat. Can anyone help, please?

Nutritionatlast answers:

Cant help, but my advice would be to see your doctor and ask for a referral to a dietician.

The treatment for Crohns causes other health issues (like wiight), and these should also be addressed as part of the treatment.

ulcerative colitis medications?

ulcerative colitis medications?

Nutritionatlast answers:

You can find it here more: http://www.drugs.com/condition/ulcerative-colitis.html

Donna asks…

My sister has ulcerative colitis and cannot afford medication, now she is in extreme pain?

does anyone knows about cheap medication use to treat ulcerative colitis, she is only 19 years old, iulcerative colitis medication I’m so worried about her and she doesn’t do anything to help herself.

Nutritionatlast answers:

Nowadays, most pharmaceutical companies offer help to people who can’t afford their medications. Your sister will need her doctor’s help to set this up, however, because the doctor will need to fax copies of the prescription and such to whoever gives the assistance. Call her doctor and talk to the nurse about prescription assistance. You’ll need proof of income for your sister, and since she is over 18, she’ll have to be willing to do this or there’s really nothing you can do. Maybe if you made some calls for her and got some information, she’d be more willing to jump in and help herself. Hope I was able to help – good luck to you both.

P.S. – You’re a good sister to worry about her – she’s lucky to have you! 🙂

i had a it look at by doctors but there no bleeding its just a stomach ulcer so im on medication for it now but i still have pain.So i ask what is the best medication treatment and what is it call and where can i get it for this stomach ulcer. so please i need all the information i need for a stomach ulcer treatment thx.

Nutritionatlast answers:

Go see a gastroenterologist. They can fix your ulcer with something called an endoscopy. They can also treat you for the bacteria (h pylori) that causes the ulcer with 3 medications. I dont know what medicine they put you on but your best bet for IMMEDIATE relieve is an antacid like maalox. But only use that for a short time. The best medicines available for ulcer are the proton pump inhibitors (PPI). Goto the pharmacy and ask for an over the counter PPI like prilosec (omepazole), you can take 2 doses at once and that will equal prescription strength. Feel better.

Sharon asks…

What is the treatment of a stomach ulcer when proton pump inhibitors do not work?

I am going to see a doctor monday… I was just wondering… Maybe ask him about possible treatments…

Nutritionatlast answers:

Not sure, i would ask a physician..
